He Ordered Some Chickens

2008/05/25

Yes, it’s true. Rick ordered 6 baby chickens which will ship in a few weeks via the postal service (yup, they do this). He also ordered a fine chicken coop for them from the folks at My Pet Chicken. Admittedly, it will take them awhile to get to that point, but first we’re gonna enjoy them tweeting around awhile. I have to say that when he first mentioned the idea of getting chickens, I thought he was joking. Then I realized he wasn’t, and I had to tell him I wasn’t ready to take care of them, so it would be up to him to do that. I still mean that, but I am enjoying watching Rick and Kelsey exploring everything there is to know about raising chickens.

He got two Australorps, two Barred Plymouth Rocks, and two White Plymouth Rocks. And that’s only the beginning. Kelsey has got her eye on getting a White Silkie Bantam at some point in the future. But I guess we need to see if we can first keep these six alive for awhile! 🙂

Chicks in the Mail

This morning we got a call at 7:30 from our local USPS office that the baby chicks had arrived. Funny thing is that they were “at the secure facility nearby” and would be transferred to the main post office by 8:30 AM. We joked that there may have been something about their connections to the CIA or the FBI that they had to be coming from the “secure facility.” Well, once Rick and Kelsey picked them up and brought them home, we all ooh-ed and aww-ed about them. They’re so cute! And here’s them coming out of the box! [image missing]

Baby Chicks Grow Fast

2008/07/27

Those baby chicks that arrived a few weeks ago…. My, they do grow fast! Some of them have names because of their personalities. Cluck Norris is one of them. She is always the first one to come out of their run. Once she does, they all seem to think it’s okay. She is also like a cannonball jumping into the water. She tends to fly up and throw herself into the middle of all of them.

Last Playtime in Basement

Yesterday we moved the chicks out of the basement and into their new home outside. At last, no more poops to clean up down there! I took a series of videos of the big day for archival purposes and have started posting them to my YouTube site. Here they are for a last playtime in the basement.

Let the Chase Begin!

It was quite funny to see my husband chasing the birds around, trying to catch them one at a time. He did the running and I did the filming. First, he removed the cage and attached it to the coop outside. Then he came back in and started working on HOW to catch them. It was quite funny. Then it was “catch me if you can.”
